36 Key Chains to give away..

I have thirty Six Singapore Key Chains to give away. But for specifics, I shall give away nine (9) from this blog-- in a form of a contest to make it fun. How? Let's see..

1.) The first to comment on this post will get one..
2.) The ninth person to comment gets another one..
3.) The 36th person to subscribe to this blog via feedburner will get another one (verified subscription only)..
4.) The first to share the link of this post to his/her FB wall gets one too..
5.) The 99th person to like A Teacher's Journey in Facebook gets one..
6.) The 29th person to comment on this post gets one..
7.) The last to comment on this post by December 31, 2010 11:50 pm gets one too..
8.) The 9th to share the link of this post on plurk gets one..
9.) Lastly, the first to tell me why she deserves to get a key-chain gets one for himself/herself plus one for his/her friend..

So what happens to the remaining Key chains? Well, twenty six key chains may just be added as give aways.. I will still have to think of ways to make the giving fun, lol.. Uhm.. No repeat winners to give chance to others.. If one person has won a slot already, I'll give the chance to the next to win the other slot.. complicated?  Basta, no repeat winners para bibu..

Fiddler On The Roof..

Here are some parts of The Fiddler on the Roof that I like very much. I am glad I found these at You Tube..

You need to listen closely and understand to be able to grasp the meaning of what the videos are all about.

I like how the story twists and how everything has evolved.

Below is my favorite:

Delikadesa: Do You Understand What it Means to Have Delikadesa?

We Filipinos are known for our sincere and hospitable nature. We are also known to be superstitious as well as having close knit family ties. The latter may come to be a positive thing or may also be taken as a negative phenomenon.

Banana Cue

In MOGCHS, a student will never go hungry. Imagine, even if one will only have P 5.00 he or she can still eat this really yummy Banana Cue. One of my students told me that he can eat this food for lunch, dinner and snacks, all in one day-- Well, price actually varies with size and where you buy your banana cue. If you only have P 5.00 sometimes you get this for P 3.00 and P 2.00 for your drink.. whew. Thank God there is still a way for my students to survive..

Campus Violence

Last night, after my class, I saw a student, first year high school at that, crying and she was being interviewed, cajoled and pepped on by her peers. I had the notion to stop and ask what the matter was when I heard her say "gisumbag ko sa tiyan" (punched on my tummy). A wee moment for me to learn that she was a victim of a campus gang that hates CAT (Citizen's Army Training) in general, and most of all, CAT officers and aspirants. She was then taken by a CAT officer and so her friends tagged along.. Being a CAT aspirant, she wanted to defend a certain CAT officer that the said gang wanted to harm. So last Friday, as her tortured state begun, a gang member asked her who they will punish, officer or aspirant. And because she answered aspirant, she was the one they knocked down. They saw her again last night, and so they hit her again. She said the gang declared that they will not stop hitting her as that was what she wanted. She was helpless and vulnerable as she walked alone on those two occasions. I didn't know what happened after that or what action the CAT officers of MOGCHS would do about that. I was a CAT officer myself when I was in high school, but we never had scenarios like that. I guess that is the biggest difference if you are studying at a private school that has a small community. MOGCHS is such a big community, people almost do not know each other here. Now I understand why during the time I was teaching at MOGCHS, all I witnessed are police patrol cars whenever there's some problem on campus, and why, during the junior's night, it was a must for police visibility at the venue, Xavier Sports and Country Club. At that time, what I had in mind  was that, the kids were so pitiful with such loud cry of mistrust. I guess it's all for everyone's protection. The girl may have just been punched, but for how long? Sooner or later such action could get worse and perhaps the worst scenario would be, that someone could get killed. So sad that it should happen to a promising high school student..

Campus violence is what we usually hear about and see on television in countries where violence is rampant. It is also often depicted in prime-time shows abroad, which are also aired through Studio 23 if one does not have cable television. So what's the deal with those gang wars and campus politics? COMPETITION. Competition gone sour. I wonder how it could ever be resolved..

Takoyaki in MOGCHS

Takoyaki is now sold in MOGCHS. It's called Takoyami.
For P 10.00, you already have a warm and filling treat. It's made of vegetables, batter and some cheese. Plus Takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise. You can not miss it as you walk along the campus.

To see how it was done, a step by step process will be found at More Food Adventures...

The Last Lecture before his Death

I found a similar yet incomplete copy of this video at Facebook and since I felt this was a good share-piece, I had to look for the video that is complete. So I arrived at these.

This one is at OPRAH: a bit shortened...

And of course, this: the exact lecture at Carnegie Mellon... quite long..

This is the last lecture prepared by Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 - July 25, 2008). He actually gave this last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before 500-packed McConomy Auditorium. "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" is the thought of this lecture as Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

Do leave a comment and tell me what you think about the lecture... What lessons apply to you at this present moment..

Word of the Week: Necrophilia

Necrophilia is the sexual attraction to corpses. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association classifies necrophilia as a paraphilia.

Other terms are: Thanatophilia and Necrolagnia
Related term: Necrochlesis (sex with a corpse)

Definition and derivation found in Wikipedia:
The word is artificially derived from Ancient Greek: νεκρός (nekros; "corpse" or "dead") and φιλία (philia; "friendship"). The term appears to have originated from Krafft-Ebing's 1886 work Psychopathia Sexualis.
Motivations for this behaviors was reviewed by Rosman and Resnick (1989) from 34 cases of necrophilia and the behaviors described in each case.

The following reasons were what they found:
  • desire to possess an unresisting and unrejecting partner
  • reunions with a romantic partner
  • sexual attraction to corpses
  • comfort or overcoming feelings of isolation
  • seeking self-esteem by expressing power over a homicide victim

Dynamic Psychology

There had been many answers but this, by far, the most simple definition:
The branch of psychology that concerns itself with the causes and motivations of behavior.

What motivates a person to do or behave the way he or she does? What are the reasons for his or her behavior? These are the questions that Dynamic Psychology would like to dig into..

John Mark Molion added to the statement above, saying that dynamic psychology is an emergent scientific discipline. While Lealyn Santillan said, Dynamic Psychology is the study of the mind and its motives, as a cause of behavior.. Honey Leth D. Cose also said that, internal drives and motives as a cause for human behavior is what Dynamic Psychology is all about.

Surely, they have defined the terms asked for, but  I have yet to confirm their sources. On the other hand, thanks to the following people who also texted their answers:

Juvelyn T. Bajuyo
Joemerlaine S. Delima
June B. Dagoc
Julius G. Ramas

Nice exercise we have, right?

Initiative: Where have you gone?

It seems that in this age and time, more and more students have NO INITIATIVE. Gone were the days when the teacher will say one thing and the students will do their part without ever asking for more directions or for more specifications about a project or two. Initiative has already gone down the drain--- why and how? Well, it could be because most of the children these days are no longer trained to have them. Spoon-feeding information as well as not giving children room to discover their potentials and hone them. I am so glad my siblings and I were trained the Montessori way as it has trained us to be persons with initiative. But Montessori or not, it all goes back to training in our home. My mother and father has always emphasized initiative as a means for coping and survival in anything and everything..

As a teacher, I try to emphasize to my students the value of having initiative, and in one way or another, I tell them that initiative can still be developed. Unfortunately, it seems too hard to teach that to persons who has already developed their sense of identity and would not want to do anything to make better of themselves.

Initiative means knowing what to do at a given situation, asserting oneself and taking charge to control a specific situation, and win or be productive in the process. It is taking the step towards a specific action or goal. And what saddens me is that, I have only met a few students who take it upon themselves, the initiative to perform a task more independently, successfully. All the rest,  they call or text from time to time and ask for specific solutions or answers, as if the instruction given was very difficult to understand.

I am a teacher, I do not spoon-feed. If one wants to learn then one must do his or her share in the learning process. My teachers did not spoon-feed me and my classmates, therefore, we learned hands-on. I worry for some of my students who are dependent on others and to their teachers. I wonder how and what they will become should they continue to be so dependent..

Buy a blog review for $10 and help Baby Bella for her Hernia operation!

Yes, I am calling on all kind souls out there. Buy a blog review for $10 and help Baby Bella for her Hernia operation!
The mother of the child you see in photo is a friend, a fellow blogger and a fellow Kagay-anon who happens to live in Bacolod. But she is a Kagay-anon in spirit and by heart. In her own way, she has contributed much to the world. As a mother, it pains me to see that her youngest, Baby Bella is in pain as she has hernia. We do not want the same thing to happen to our own kids, right? Surely, there must be something we can do to help, not only in prayers but in finding a solution to their problem. Technically, Baby Bella will have to have her Hernia operated, and money is needed in the process.
We can help raise the expenses needed for Bella's operation by purchasing a blog review from her Mom, Mommy Rubz. A blog review from her PR3 blog. The review will consist of 150 words (all positive) with 2 links (home page link) and an image of the header or screen shot of the blog to be reviewed. One link with the blog title as the anchor text and the other link is on the image.
Please send an email to pehcats@gmail.com with the url of the blog you want Ruby to review.. and she will reply with the url of the post and the paypal id where you can send the payment and if you are generous enough, you can even add more to the $10 price.
I hope whoever will read this post will,  in one way or another, be giving enough to share.. Either repost this request or tell people who you think can help.. And lastly, let us all pray that when surgery comes, Baby Bella will be alright..
Thank you and blessings be upon you..

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust. Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.
These Eight words the Rede fulfill:
"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

First Day of School Introductions - A CONTEST

During the first meeting in every semester or school year, there is always some portion of the time that is alloted for introductions. In this manner, students and teachers will familiarize names, faces and some other aspects of the teacher-student relationship. It is in this venue that expectation setting is also at hand.

In my observation, most of my students find it difficult to introduce themselves, to say what they want to say or ask what they want to ask. Some need to adjust a few hinges when it comes to grammatical errors and pronunciation deficits. There may be others who are able to deliver better, but still, some degree of learning and improvement are necessary for them to become better. I always emphasize to my students that learning is a lifelong process, and that, all of us are learners as well as teachers.  I will get to learn a few things from them, just as I will help them learn a few things. Give and take.

Anyway, here are a few common mistakes that I have come to observe from Friday's meetings ( from all the classes that I will be handling this semester).

1.) Hi classmates. My name is Juan Tarpulano dela Cruz and I am graduated from (The Name of School at The name of the location of the HS).
2.) My hobbies was included eating and watching TB.
3.) I was presently living in my auntie's house in (The Location or the complete address).
4.) I am burned on (birthdate).
5.) My expectation in this subject is to expect nothing except that the teacher will lesson good the lesson.

I have already corrected the words and phrases that needed correction, so if you were in my class last meeting, and listened well enough,  you will be able to correct them now, as you go along reading this post. I know we are not having English 101 but SOCSCI 101-- or General Psychology, but hey, English is everywhere. The said corrections will help strengthen  your  ability to communicate in English. Which you can actually be thankful for later on.. Do not worry, mistakes happen and we can always correct them. However, do try not to make the same mistake over and over, as if you have not learned anything from the previous corrections.

Anyway, in the spirit of fun and learning, let's make this learning process a semi-contest. This is open to all my students, new or old. I would like to know how you will correct the sentences and phrases above. All you have to do is comment on this post, the necessary corrections to be done. I will hold the comments until a winner is picked. I will announce the winner  on the first Monday of July.

Winner will get P 100. If no one will be able to give the right answers after June 2010, I shall post the corrections and a new batch of questions for another round of fun and learning shall be posted. P 10 shall be added to the pot money every time no one is able to answer my questions, until some one will get the right answers.

(SPONSORS ARE WELCOME, CASH, GCs OR IN KIND-- to serve as prizes for special categories)

How to Make An Exciting Doughnut

This is called Chocolate & Sprinkles Doughnut at Krispy Kreme. Do you know that it is easy to make this one?  If you watch Special Agent Oso at Playhouse Disney, everything that he does involves just three easy steps, and making this doughnut is also as easy as three simple steps.

First, you dip the original glazed doughnut with melted chocolate.

Second, place it in a saucer and get some sprinkles to sprinkle on top of it

Third, sprinkle the sprinkles on top

Then you are ready to serve it.. Or eat, lol..

Information Online

Before, teachers tend to be old looking as they stress their way to so many tasks. Checking papers, designing lessons or making lesson plans for each class, and let's say that the teacher is teaching in a public school, so that's 9 classroom, 9 different lessons and 9 different approaches. Tiring, stressful and really unhealthy.

But those days are gone now. With the onset of technology, teachers have become more advanced and more relaxed. Although there are still a few who would do things traditionally. Plus we can add the fact that most teachers now have a wide selection of references courtesy of the Internet. So whether it's for their lessons or for personal purposes. For example, they can go ahead and see www.oxis.com for products to help them with anti aging. Or they can go to wikipedia and research about the causes or reasons for whatever they wish to ask about. Topics like Oxidative stress and many others.

Of course, if they wish for information to come to them, the can go ahead and use twitter, like foolowing Oxis on Twitter for more information about their products and new discoveries on beauty and health. As well as learn updates on FB, by liking Oxis on facebook

So with all these things going on online, oxidative stress is less likely to hit them. Unless of course if they themselves are suffering from cancer or Alzheimer's disease or kidney trouble.  And if they are always exposed to pollution and all other free radicals, then oxidative stress is most likely to build up.  But for as long as they use products with  anti-oxidants, anti-aging or glutathione, then can be eradicated.

Vitamins and More

Every teacher knows that our roles are not confined to being a teacher. We are of course the fathers and mothers of our students in school. And although it's not our job to see to it that they are well fed and given the proper nutrition, it is our duty to make these kids understand the importance of such as well as keeping their parents well informed about the new discoveries in health and nutrition for their kids' sake. In far flung areas, it is the teacher who often give ideas as to what vitamins and name brands are helpful and what are not. So it helps to keep oneself informed at all times.

One great source of information is Shopwiki. Not only does it allow teachers to give directions and the right information, but it allows for them to have great choices and somehow, direct parents where to get them. Like Vitamin B3 for example. There are many name brands for Vitamin B3, and knowing all of them or as much of them can allow the teacher to give parents the same choices as well.

And of course, when the teacher is free to relax and enjoy her "me-time", she can go ahead and browse Shopwiki for her shopping needs.

WORD OF THE WEEK: SIBLINGS

As a site concerned for education and development of learning, I am initializing this educational weekly post that hopefully will help people who may be confused about specific words. For instance, the first word in this first installation, Siblings. This word is often mistakenly used by some people to mean " their children", which is not the case. So in order to clarify and to help aid said persons without hurting their feelings, I am initiating this weekly post. As a teacher, it is our role to help people, not insult them in anyway by pointing out their mistakes out-rightly. Instead, we provide them with details and references with which they learn or relearn what they need to learn. This way, they will no longer be embarrassed nor be subject to unfair criticism as well as ridicule by bullies and the grammar sheriffs.
Siblings- By definition, the word Siblings is defined as people who share at least one parent. The male sibling is called  "brother" while the female sibling is called "sister".

They may grow up together, they may grow up apart. Point of the matter is that they are related with each other. Step sisters and step brothers may still be considered in the same terms for as long as they can be legally supported by adoption, otherwise the term "step-brother" or "step sister" shall be applied.. Countries and cultures vary in this respect, but the essence of being siblings still remains.
